The original AI, Johnny 5, also known as "S-A-I-N-T Prototype Number 5" is the fictional robotic star of the movies Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2. He is a former military robot imbued with intelligence and sentience by a lightning bolt and is considered to be alive in the philosophical sense, as he has emotions and is self-aware. Number 5 was designed by Dr. Newton Crosby and his partner Benjamin Jahrvi, and was constructed by Nova Laboratories Inc., along with four other prototypes, as technology demonstrators for the United States Department of Defense (DoD). More recently he was rebuilt and given a new lease of life by Nottingham-based film fan and engineer Ryan Howard. Taking 6 years and involving 14-hour days as he dedicated his time to building the robot out of more than 10,000 parts, they now tour conventions and conferences across the world.
